This 8-week introductory level program is offered to patients of the STAR Family Health Team. It is available only to adults 18 years of age and over. There is a 10$ fee to cover material costs. 


This highly effective program is clinically proven to help those struggling with the following: 

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain and other medical conditions


Participants will learn to use strategies based on meditation and yoga to manage stress, enhance balance of body and mind, and promote improved well-being and healing.

Happiness 101

Program Type: Mental Health & Well-being
Description:

Happiness 101 is a course for people who want to be happier, whether you are depressed, languishing or flourishing. This interactive educational workshop program is open to adults 18 and older.  

 

Research has shown that while genetic set point and circumstance are significant determining factors in one’s level of happiness, over 40% of happiness is personally controlled and happiness habits can be learned. 

 

Benefits of happiness include:

  • Decreased cortisol (stress hormone) levels
  • Increased immune function
  • Decreased physiological reactivity to stress 
  • Better quality of life
  • Longer life (7.5 to 10 years longer!)
  • Better sleep
  • Less pain & less stress

 

You will learn:

  • What happy people do and how they think
  • How to purposefully create happiness for yourself
  • 13 skills that are proven to lead to increased happiness

Memory Clinic

Program Type: Mental Health & Well-being
Description:


When a patient or a family member starts to recognize memory changes in themselves or their loved one, the individual will have an opportunity to receive a comprehensive assessment by an interdisciplinary team of professionals that are part of the STAR Family Health Team Memory Clinic. The team is comprised of a physician, a registered nurse, a social worker, and very supportive members of community agencies which include CCAC and the Alzheimer Society of Perth County.


After receiving a referral to the clinic by the family physician, the patient can expect assessments on many aspects of memory function including driving safety. The patient and family will receive recommendations on treatment options and plans for care. Our goal is to help patients with memory difficulties maintain independent living and best quality of life for as long as possible.


The Memory Clinic is offered monthly rotating between the three sites of the STAR Family Health Team.

Mending Through Mindfulness - MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy)

Description:

 

What is Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)?

MBCT helps reduce stress and anxiety and prevents relapses in those who suffer from depression. It combines the practice of mindfulness meditation with the practical skills of learning to interrupt thought patterns that lead to negative spirals in mood. Mindfulness is a non-judgmental way of paying attention in the present moment and leads to increased personal awareness and clarity.

 

Program Description

Offered at no cost to patients of the STAR Family Health Team, this 8-week program is for anyone experiencing moderate anxiety/depression. It is also highly recommended for people with a history of depression.

Participants will be trained to identify the triggers and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and then effectively address them as they arise in everyday life.

Mindful Moments - weekly drop-in class

Program Type: Mental Health & Well-being
Description:

A weekly, drop-in opportunity to meet and meditate for those who have some experience with mindfulness practice. A variety of meditations will be offered including: sitting, walking, mindful movement and loving kindness.

 

Runs every Friday excluding holidays and inclement weather.
